Lord, I cannot sleep tonight, and lying here in the dark I feel restless and alone. Like the psalmist whose hand reached out in the night, I am reaching for You in these wakeful hours. I do not fully understand why rest will not come — maybe worry, maybe my body, maybe something I cannot name. Meet me here anyway. Instead of fighting the wakefulness, let me use it to be honest with You about what is on my heart. Loosen the grip of whatever is keeping me up. If sleep comes, thank You; if it is slow, stay close and steady me through the night. You are awake with me, Lord, and I am not as alone as I feel. Amen.
