Lord, I am a long way from home tonight, in a place I did not choose, doing a job that asks more of me than I let the people I love know. Your word says that even if I settle at the far edge of the sea, Your hand is already there to lead me and hold me — so let that be true of this distance too. Be the home I cannot get back to right now. Steady me through the long stretches of waiting and the sudden stretches of fear, and keep something in me tender, so that what I see here does not harden me into someone my family will not recognise. Watch over the ones serving beside me, and over the family whose nights are anxious with my absence. I cannot promise them how or when I will be back, and I will not pretend I am not weary and homesick; I am asking You to hold both ends of this distance at once. Lead me, Lord, and hold me. Amen.
