A prayer for you

Prayer for Rescue Workers

For those who run toward what everyone else is running from — here are words for the weariness this work leaves behind.

but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 (WEBBE)

Lord, Your word promises that those who wait on You renew their strength — that they run and not grow weary, walk and not faint. I need that promise to be true, because this work empties me out. I have pulled people from wreckage and water and reached some in time and not others, and I carry their faces home with me. Renew the strength this keeps spending. Steady my hands and my nerve on the next call, and keep my own fear from freezing me when someone is depending on me. Hold the ones I could not reach, and ease the weight of the ones I still see when I close my eyes. Give me a few people I can be honest with about what this costs. I cannot promise myself I will come through unshaken, and I will not pretend the hard calls do not haunt me; I am only asking You to be the strength my own body runs out of. Renew me, Lord. Amen.
