Lord, tomorrow my sister has surgery, and I keep catching on the thought of her going under — asleep, unable to help herself. Your word gives me something to hold through the night: that a person can lie down and sleep and wake again, because You are the one sustaining them. So sustain my sister tomorrow — through the going-under, the long middle, and the waking up. Be present in the room I am not allowed to enter. Steady the surgeons. Bring her back to us, and back to the long, winding conversations we are nowhere near finished having. And in the waiting, when my mind bolts to the worst, remind me that her sleeping and her waking are both held by You. Sustain my sister, Lord, the whole way through, and give her back to me. Amen.
