Lord, my son has wandered far from where I hoped he would be — from his faith, maybe from us, into a life I would never have chosen for him. I miss who he was, and I am frightened of who he is becoming. Your word says the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost — so go after my boy in the far country where I cannot reach him. I am not going to dictate to You how or when he comes home, or even whether he does; I am asking You to pursue him with a love more relentless than mine, and to keep me from despair while You do. Guard him from the worst consequences of his choices. Soften my own heart so that, like the father in the story, I am watching the road with open arms and not a clenched fist. Help me love him without conditions and pray without giving up. Seek my son, Lord, wherever he has gone. Amen.
