Lord, my friend goes into surgery tomorrow, and as a friend I sometimes feel a step outside the family circle of it all — but love does not stop at the edge of a family, and neither do my prayers. Your word says that with You set always before us, at our right hand, we will not be shaken. Be at my friend's right hand tomorrow, when none of us is allowed to be. Steady the surgeons. Hold my friend through the going-under and the coming-back-up. And settle the helpless churn in me, the wanting-to-do-something with nowhere to put it; let me pour it into prayer and into whatever practical help the family will accept. You are never shaken, Lord, even when we are. Keep my friend at Your right hand, and bring them safely through. Amen.
