Lord, my father is through surgery, and I can already see how hard he is going to find the helplessness of recovery — a proud, capable man suddenly needing help with the simplest things. Your word says to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand, trusting You to lift us up in due time; give my dad the grace to be humbled without being shamed, to receive the help he has always been the one to give. Strengthen his body as it heals. Guard his spirit from the particular despair of a strong man who feels weak. Help me serve him in a way that protects his dignity rather than wounding it. And teach us both that leaning — on each other and on You — is not the failure he has spent a lifetime believing it to be. Lift my father up again, Lord, in Your own good time. Amen.
