Lord, You have given me a child through adoption, and I love them as fully as if they were born to me. Your word says You adopted us as Your own children, chosen and wanted — let my child know that same belonging, all the way down. But I do not want to pretend their story began with me. They carry a history, and a loss, that is real, even when they cannot name it. Give me the humility to honour the people and the past that are part of who they are, and never to ask them to be grateful for being 'rescued.' Help me hold the both-and — that they are completely mine and also someone else's, that they can grieve and belong at the very same time. Heal the wounds that came before me. And let my child grow up sure, in their bones, that they are wanted, chosen, and loved. Hold my child's whole story, Lord, and hold them. Amen.
