Lord, I walk toward the fire when every instinct says run from it, and I will not pretend I am never afraid. There are doors I have opened not knowing what was behind them, and nights I have come home with smoke in my chest and things I cannot unsee. Your word says that when I pass through the waters You are with me, and when I walk through the fire the flame will not consume me — so be with me there, in the heat and the dark and the split-second choices. Steady me when the alarm goes and the adrenaline takes over. Watch over the crew beside me, and let us look out for one another. Hold the ones we carry out and the ones we reach too late. I cannot control how every call ends, and I will not pretend the losses do not stay with me; I am asking You to walk into each one alongside me. Be with me in the fire, Lord. Amen.
